Bon Om Touk
Bon Om Touk, Cambodia’s Water Festival, is the country’s largest and most anticipated holiday. Celebrating the Tonle Sap, the world’s only river that flows in both directions depending on the season, the festival coincides with the river’s unique reversal and rapid currents—a stunning sight.
The festival’s full name is Preah Reach Pithi Bon Om Tuk, Bandet Pratit, Sampeah Preah Khae & Ok Ambok, translating to “the royal boat races, floating lantern festival, moon worship, and ambok eating.” The celebration, established during King Norodom’s reign (1860-1904) when the capital moved to Phnom Penh, has been a cherished tradition for over 100 years.
Ambok: A Traditional Delicacy
Ambok, a signature part of the ceremony, is a flattened rice dish made by frying rice in its husks, beating it until soft, and then mixing it with banana and coconut juice. Typically eaten at midnight or after the incense burns out, ambok remains a popular snack sold widely during the Water Festival.
